The Porcelain Veneer Process | ArticlesBase.com

Porcelain veneers are a very popular cosmetic dentistry treatment. They are basically thin shells of dental ceramic, bonded to the front of teeth to make your smile whiter and perfectly shaped. Veneers can drastically improve your self confidence if your smile is not quite right. Back in the early Hollywood era, actors and actresses would pull their teeth and then get dentures to make their smile perfect. Thank goodness we dont have to do that anymore thanks to porcelain veneers.

Porcelain veneers wont fix major tooth problems and are a form of cosmetic dentistry, meaning that they are mainly just for looks. But if you just want to enhance your smile then veneers are right for you. Many problems that veneers can fix are:

  • Mismatched sizes of teeth
  • Uneven tooth shapes
  • Stains that did not respond to whitening
  • Tooth crookedness or misalignment
  • Chips and cracks in teeth
  • Minor gaps between teeth

Before you can proceed with veneers, a dentist would have to examine your teeth to make sure that the veneers would work. Coloring, size, shape and alignment all have to be looked at. You could look at before and after pictures so you will know what to expect. The dentist would then pick a color of porcelain veneer from the lab to best match your teeth. If you decide to go ahead with veneers, you will only need two more visits.

How veneers are applied

A cosmetic dentist would start by smoothing out your teeth by grinding off enamel to make room for the veneers. This can be mildly uncomfortable but anesthesia could be used. They would then take a mold of your teeth using malleable impression putty and send it to a dental laboratory where they will use it as a model for your veneers. In about two weeks time, you will go back to the dentist where they will fit your veneers and possibly grind off more enamel to ensure a proper fit. If you are pleased with the look the dentist will carefully secure them and you are on your way. Veneers need the same daily care as you would give your regular teeth. They are stain resistant and very durable so you should enjoy them for years. Imagine in just two visits, you can have a whiter, straighter smile.
